I’m Ms. Pennsylvania, and other stuff you should read

I want to shine a spotlight on three writers and their blogs which were recently added to “Mama’s Favorites.”

First up, there’s Jen at JenX67, who made me feel all fluttery when she found me on Facebook (which, btw, is the new devil, having stolen that title from MySpace) and told me that she reads this blog and selected me to represent PA in her “50 GenX Bloggers-50 States” feature.  She’s got my picture up and everything (but I’m wearing a leather jacket instead of a swimsuit and heels; sorry to disappointment.).  But enough about me.  Check out Jen’s great writing and aesthetically pleasing blog.

In other Jen news, there’s Jen Lancaster at Jennsylvania, author of a three-part (to date) memoir.  I am currently reading Bitter is the New Black: Confessions of a Condescending, Egomaniacal, Self-Centered Smartass, Or, Why You Should Never Carry a Prada Bag to the Unemployment Office.

I recently finished the 2nd in the trilogy, Bright Lights, Big Ass: A Self-Indulgent, Surly, Ex-Sorority Girl’s Guid to Why It Often Sucks in the City, or Who are These Idiots and Why Do They All Live Next Door to Me?

Finally, I just ordered Such a Pretty Fat: One Narcissist’s Quest To Discover if Her Life Makes Her Ass Look Big, Or Why Pie is Not The Answer.

So, as you can see, Jen’s titles sort of speak for themselves.

I don’t share Jen’s politics much, but I enjoy her hilarious writing,  and am encouraged by the fact that she writes unapologetically and doesn’t take herself seriously.  Well, except for the narcissism and egomania, that is.

Finally, check out this non-Jen writer, Linda Keenan, an ex-CNN writer and current contributor at burbia.com.  Linda maintains the blog, Thoroughly Modern Mommy.  With satirical “articles” like,  “Mom of 8 Amazingly Taut, Except for Vagina”, “Whore Lobster Defends Lifestyle”, and “Atheist SAHM So Lonely She Accepts Christ”,  Linda has indeed been “skewering parenting pieties and a few other things since naptime December 10, 2007.”  Think of her as the print version of the Daily Show’s fake news.

Happy reading!

Multi-tasking stats: I composed this blog while calling my kids’ dentist for the 3rd time today–and getting the automated message for the 3rd time today–ordering books for a class I’m teaching this fall, and wondering how Kwame Kilpatrick can walk with cojones so large.

I changed your age! Sorry about that. I thought I’d read that somewhere. I love the name “jennsylvania.” I’m jealous of it, just as I am jealous of CalamityJen on Twitter. I love these clever names. About the article, yes, I’m mixing up the media there. I’ll correct it. I meant to say Black mommy memoirs. The other thing that I so connected with and no doubt - WHY I stalked you (LOL!) is that three years ago, I wrote an OP Ed for the Daily Oklahoman - Oklahoma’s major daily. It was a humorous piece (I later won an OK SPJ award for it) but, some very mean white chicks blogged nasty about me on their white-chick stay-at-home mommy blogs. One even had an op ed printed in response to mine in which she made reference to the mommy wars. The irony was that my piece, “What Working Moms Do,” was more a testimony for men and women who work and don’t have chidren or have spouses staying home to take care of them. The stay-at-home mom was never really my focus. Anyway, thanks for stopping by my blog. Your beautiful tiara is in the mail!!

Oh, P.S., for anyone reading that comment and assuming those statement sound racist, I am in fact peach in color. Never really could figure out why they called me white.

Jen, can you provide a link to your OpEd.

It always amazes me when people object loudly to stuff that’s just simply NOT ABOUT THEM.
