“Hey, Mom! We’ve got Obama and Clinton FIGHTING!”
Say what?
Mini-Me, age 9, and a friend (also 9) are in the next room playing computer games. Last I checked, the game was Club Penguin. So of course, this little announcement from my budding Don King warranted an investigation.

I’m working on a critical essay about black women/motherhood/mommy memoir writing for a magazine, and I’m looking for books by black women that deal with mothering and/or the family-paid work balancing act women do. So far, I have:
“I’m Every Woman…” by Lonnae O’Neal Parker

Finally–after a long wait–my copy of PoemMemoirStory (PMS) #8, a literary journal out of the University of Alabama, arrived in the mail today! #8 is a special black women writers’ issue, guest edited by HonorĂ©e Fanonne Jeffers, AND I’M IN IT! More accurately, my short story “Bomani Jones” is in it.
Happiness!
This is my […]

First (for me at least), there was Stuff White People Like.
Then I discovered, Stuff Black People Like, a site that’s still under construction (but clink on “Stuff Black People Like Blog” on the left side of the page to access).
And now, via my Yale Black Alum Network e-list, comes…
Stuff Educated Black People Like
I’m […]

What’s the big deal?
Just choose.
It’s not even worth mentioning
this contrived “dilemma”–
this expectation that you would
wrap yourself in a flag
that was not sewn with you in mind,
a flag flown over a country where this slip-knot–
really, seriously, it’s just a slip-knot–
was wrapped around the necks of
men, women, and children
who look like you–What dilemma?
Just choose.
Especially if you are […]
