The New Math

2 grown-ups
2 states
240 miles apart

1 airline plus
Unlimited cell phone minutes
plus 2 trusting hearts
Equal a 2nd chance at love

1 Spring Break
5 daughters
4, 9, 9, 11, 11
3 biological
1 adopted
1 borrowed
all loved

1 mini-van, also borrowed,
swapped with 1 ex, mine
Numerous people asking, “How DO you do it????
Zero bitterness?”
Zero interest in doing anything but what’s best for
2 of those daughters, so:
1 mini-van, borrowed from 1 ex

Yesterday:
1 trip to the zoo and aquarium
2 monkeys fighting
3 funky elephants
1 missing komodo dragon
1 attention-whore polar bear
1 resentful sheep
3 smiling sea-lion
2 smiling sea-lions peeing

1 early dinner out
3 appetizers
8 entrees
1 big check
1 big tip for the patient waitress

1 drive up a mountain
1 incline ride down the mountain
1 incline ride back up the mountain
1 queasy peek from the Observation Deck
10 coltish legs sprinting around
Zero concern for my queasiness
Or the billion city lights
8 dollars to park
16 dollars to ride
Immeasurable fun
1 drive back down the mountain

Back to
1 house
3 glasses of wine with
1 friend who stops by
He has 3 sons
Shakes his head 3 times
At the impromptu fashion show:
1 bee costume plus cat’s eye sunglasses
1 princess dress plus a pirate’s hat
1 fuzzy bath robe plus a pink and black wig
Add, subtract, and multiply layers
100 shoes and accessories

3 bedrooms
4 beds
3 couches
4 girls sleep on 1 floor

1 sweet girl sleeps with 1 tired mommy
who has 3 deadlines in 2 weeks
2 deadlines next month
1 new professional opportunity
Not enough hours in 1 day
Falls asleep with 1 laptop
On her chest

New morning:
4 girls awake
2, then 2 more
1 sweet girl sleeps on
Probably until she is awakened
by the smell of
11 pieces of cinnamon French toast
15 pieces of bacon
1 bowl of Raisin Bran
and 1 cup of milk, warm

Later:
2 pounds of fettucine
1 recipe for Alfredo sauce
Too many cooks in the kitchen
Two or three indulgent dinner guests
Who have zero daughters

3 more days left
1 museum day
1 ice-skating day
1 roller-skating day

And then 1 quiet ride to the airport
6 X 3 good-byes
2 dozen tears, estimated, based on previous tallies

1 good memory

    Harper’s got nothing on you.

    I enjoyed this thoroughly.

    Thanks, Golden!

Ink! I am such a Harper’s Index nerd. Don’t tell nobody. Also, we’ll be in town for Easter, so let’s do catch up! I’ll email you with contact info.
