I’m cheating

Fridays are music days here at the 32 Days of Black History celebration, and because I’m sick–it’s viral, not bacterial and therefore must run its course–today, I’m totally going to cheat and be lame and just encourage everyone to buy e. badu’s latest, New Amerykah Part One (4th World War).

Here’s the first track off of it, Honey The Healer. Listen to it, and may your ears feel better than I do right now.

Maybe Yvette has a meaty music post for you to sink your teeth into today.

I aint even gonna front. There is a WHOLE lotta stuff going on in that CD.

I heard it twice so far, and…And i wish she wasnt such a damn Artist.

In about 6 months….ill be fully prepared to hail this as certifiable genius.

    Until then, Im trying.

    @ Inkognegro:

I hear you. Last night was the first time I sat and listened straight through. I want to be in love with this one like I was with “Mama’s Gun”, musically AND lyrically. So far, I’m only feeling it in pieces, and nothing has grabbed me lyrically. With “Mama’s Gun”, I had whole anthems! But I suppose an Artiste would not want us to make such comparisons…

Did you feel that the quality of her voice has gone down? I can’t tell if it’s her, or the production.

It’s more along the lines of the brief (and kinda experimental) Worldwide Underground than her other stuff. There is a lot there. Give it a couple more listens, y’all. (I guarantee it won’t take 6 months!)

I did have a similar reaction to “Worldwide Underground.” But I had the pleasure of seeing Ms. Badu live, in a small venue (she crowd-surfed and her butt was in MY hands!), prior to the release of “WU.” She previewed material from that album–with her trademark disclaimer, “Y’all know I’m an artist and I’m sensitive about my shit”–and I have to say that what showed up on the album wasn’t as tight as what I heard that night. For example, the trance-like, “I Want You” had people in the crowd looking at each other like, “Wow…y’all feel that?”

  7. TAMBAY Says:

I didn’t buy the whole album, just individual tracks on iTunes. I’ve been hooked on “Me” for a few days now. It’s rather simple and glorifying I think… but maybe that’s why I like it.

Do you think the quality of her voice has changed? Maybe too much puffing, and not enough passing?
