Lovely day, Lovely day…

Mini-Me is home from school today (start of the long President’s Day weekend/vaca), but for Baby Girl it was business as usual–preschool. So…I’m twisting Mini-Me’s locs, and we are watching Le Mozart Noir based on Christina’s recommendation. The film introduces my budding violinist to Le Chevalier de Saint-Georges, Joseph de Bologne, a swashbuckling son of a slave, 18th-centuryAfro-French composer, violin virtuoso, and conductor.

Hey…this post counts as a 32 Days BHM music entry!

Oh, excellent! What a great way to spend the afternoon! I know she’ll just love him (as I’m sure you will, as well.) And make sure she understands that The Three Musketeers were Black - okay?

    @ Christina:

    Three Musketeers Noirs…check!

Loved “Saint-Georges”. MM asked a lot of questions, and we both enjoyed the music and learning about his life. There was the scene with him in bed with his lover (”Are they having s-e-x?”), and a question about how they could have a baby when she was married to someone else…

    BUT OTHER THAN THAT :-)

…thanks for the recommendation. We’re also going to check out “Nuttin But Stringz.”

We’re passing the DVD on to her violin teacher.

Eek! So, so, so, sorry about the sex…and the adultery….and the infanticide…
but ummm, that’s life among the aristocrats in the 1700’s? :)

If I were peeking Nuttin But Stringz, I’d only buy 3 songs. Broken Sorrow, Thunder and Egyptian In the Night. These talented youngsters are in their 20’s and were ill-advised as to the shape of their album. It’s not bad - but - it is young. They should have stuck to what they are really good at - as evidenced by the above three songs.

No apologies necessary. It’s good practice for me because these tough questions are only good to start coming faster and…tougher.

Regularly, I get asked to explain a bumper sticker on a car in our neighborhood: “I’m Pro-Choice AND I Pray.”

It’s a bit soon for that one, but unless my neighborhood moves–or gets rid of the bumper sticker–I’m sure MM’s going to hold me to my promise to explain when she’s older.

OK, I’m hooked - I’ve got to go learn more about this Joseph de Bologne. This could be another one for the “are you smarter than a 5th grader” set. I don’t know shit about no Joseph de Bologne. MM could certainly school me on the life and times of the man.
