“Are you there, God…?”
So tonight, we are saying prayers at bedtime. We thank God for the snow day, for a warm house, and good food. For love and all our friends and family. Then Baby Girl (age 4) wants to add something:
“And God, please make me a grown-up because it’s not working out. I’m eating the fruits and vegetables every day, but it’s not working out.”
This is not the first time prayer time has turned into open mic night at the Improv. A recent exchange:
One night, we (Mini-Me, 9; Baby Girl; and me) are saying prayers before bedtime. I go first, and among other things, I pray that the girls would be nicer to each other, and learn to get along better than they have been.
When it’s Mini-Me’s turn to pray, her prayer includes:
“…and I just want to follow up on what Mommy said about me and BG getting along. God, please help BG to understand that if she’s mean to me or hits me, I’m going to hit her back…”
MM wraps up, and then it’s BG’s turn:
“…and I pray that if MM hits me, I will hit her with a stick. And if she hits me again, I will hit her with a stick again…”
After BG says “amen,” MM announces that she wants to pray again:
“…and God, I want BG to know that if she hits me with a stick, I will defend myself. I’m not just going to take it.”
I pretty much lose it at this point, and can’t stop myself from laughing. I tell them that I’ve never heard a prayer like that before. MM offers, “Would you like for us to do it again, you record it, and put it on YouTube?”

(I have a busy night ahead. With a snow day today, and the girls at home, I didn’t get in much writing time. But I’ve got several blog entries in my head, so when I stop to procrastinate, I’ll post them.)

You need to get this stuff on tape. You just can’t write wonderful stuff like this :o)
Plus I think they’d have a good laugh in a few years when they watch themselves.

I need to just keep a camera on them at all times.
