And so it begins…

For Christmas, Mini-Me, who is 9 years old, got a laptop. She is thrilled to be able to write her own stories whenever and wherever she wants without having to ask to use my laptop (99% of the time, the answer was “no.”). She’s also discovered the joys of IM. Her Friends List is comprised of a friend of hers (also 9) and me. She and said friend enjoy talking on the phone and IMing at the same time (?????), mostly experimenting with different fonts and smilies, occasionally engaging in such riveting conversation as “Do you know what ‘LOL’ means?” and making up their own shorthands (”BFUWD” apparently means “Best Friends Until We Die”). And when they aren’t IMing, they are playing a virtual game together (something to do with penguins). And talking on the phone.

Tonight, in a different part of the house, I signed onto IM to talk to my BFF, Genie. I thought it would be fun to IM Mini-Me while I was at it. Wouldn’t she be surprised and delighted to see a little box with my name pop up on her screen???

Our exchange was as follows:

—–

Me: Hello, [Mini-Me]!

Mini-Me: Hello, Mom.

[5 seconds later]

Mini-Me: gotta go

—–

I am officially no longer the center of her universe. I guess I should be glad she doesn’t yet know how to make herself Invisible to me.

Le sigh.

Multi-tasking Stats–While writing this blog, I also: put my locs up in curlers, dried a load of laundry, charged cell phone, got water, printed boarding passes, and IMed with Genie.

It is a good idea to let her explore and find her world. you are setting the stage for great things to come.

An exciting new beginning! Love the photo and the multitasking theme to this one. Thanks for this entry - I was laughing so hard I had to repeat it word-for-word to dh. At 14, older dd’s IM’s go mostly like this: “Yeah.” “Yeah.” “LOL.” “Sorry.” So you’ve got that to look forward to - LOL!

Karen, I marvel at how chatty she is now, and how monosyllabic she may become! :-)

I marvel too that your oldest is 14. Why, just yesterday…

    Gotta love Club Penguin! :)

My 9yo is chatty on the phone, but IMing?! That’s something else! Aidan is disinterested in the computer until it comes to looking up video game cheats.
